Major business opportunities for UK companies in Brazil's high growth market

UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) hosted an international sustainability seminar this week detailing the major business opportunities for UK companies in Brazil.

Representatives from the British Consulate in Sao Paulo and the International Centre for Sustainable Development invited UK organisations to contribute sustainable construction expertise in key areas such as:

  • Planning
  • Management
  • Security
  • Construction of stadia
  • Transport links
  • Housing
  • Sanitation.

With the world's fifth largest population of 190 million people, Brazil is one of the most rapidly developing economies.

As hosts of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games in 2016, the Brazilian government is set to invest an estimated £320 billion in infrastructure and social / urban development.

Brazil's construction industry already employs 2.4 million people and thousands of new jobs will be created in preparing the 12 host cities for these major sporting events, not to mention the estimated 600,000 visitors who will be attending from all over the world.

£1.4 billion has been earmarked for expanding and modernising airports across the country, whilst £10 billion is to be spent on improving and expanding urban transport systems. With an obligation to ensure that this development is carried out as sustainably as possible, UK construction specialists are well placed to take advantage of these opportunities.

"Supplying to the global events market allows firms to showcase their expertise on the world stage and win future contracts based on this experience", said Andrew Bacchus, Head of Construction and Global Sports Projects for UKTI. "From stadium construction, safety and security to catering and event management, UK companies have the skills and expertise to deliver first class sporting spectacles."

In his presentation, Bacchus outlined how the UKTI can help UK companies overcome potential barriers to doing business in Brazil such as language difficulties, strict labour laws and high taxation. From identifying key partners to arranging trade missions, UKTI works with organisations to capitalise on international business opportunities and smooth the path to successfully enter the Brazilian market.
