Mark Farmer: Offsite key to fixing the skills and quality issue
A dwindling workforce is the ‘burning platform for change’
Report from – Damien Carr
In a wide-ranging keynote at BRE’s Offsite Outlooks event on 15 February, Mark Farmer, CEO of Cast and author of ‘The Farmer Review of the UK Construction Labour Model – Modernise or Die’ highlighted the importance of pre-manufactured homes as a solution to the fundamental problems in the industry around skills and quality.
One of the failures in the industry, he told delegates, was the lack of standardisation.
“We bespoke every design that we do and re-invent the wheel every time, and very little standardisation opportunities are harnessed. That doesn’t mean we have to cookie cut everything,” he said.
